2002 Radio/Communication System Upgrade

The grant will be utilized as a part of the funding requested by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Secure Communications Upgrade. The secure communications upgrade is an initiative to modernize the communications system utilized by SLED. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's goal is to provide a clearer, more reliable and interoperable statewide communications system thereby improving their services to the citizens of South Carolina and the safety of their agents in the field. SLED will address this goal by procuring communications and radio equipment for all SLED Agents, as well as the central dispatching system located at SLED headquarters. This project promises to (1) provide greater interoperability and cooperation between agencies, (2) provide significant cost savings through commercial off the shelf systems (COTS), (3) vastly improve system/communications coverage, and (4) provide clearer, more reliable real-time communications in both day to day operations and during times of crisis.
