Project Summary for 2002-RC-CX-K002 s1
This award in supplement number 1 to grant 2002-RC-CX-K002 and will allow the Iowa Department Public Safety to enable and facilitate the provision of quality forensic science services offered by the Iowa Criminalistics Laboratory (ICL) and to provide those services at a level consistent with past activities and future trends. The ICL is a part of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is itself part of the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The ICL is an ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory that provides forensic science support for all law enforcement agencies within the state and serves approximately 2.9 million citizens. The ICL has a professional staff of approximately 50 employees and is the only "full-service" laboratory within the state of Iowa. The laboratory provides its customers with forensic analysis in the areas of drug identification and quantitation, toxicology, casework and offender DNA profiling, latent impression identification, firearm and tool mark analysis, arson and explosive residues, photography, questioned documents, alcohol analysis in blood, breath, and urine, and trace microscopic analysis. All aspects of the laboratory operation are expected to benefit by the funding.
