PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-IJ-CX-0024
The proposed project will document the recruitment and hiring problems facing law enforcement agencies nationwide, and will gather information on innovative recruiting and hiring practices agencies are using to increase the number of female and racial and ethnic minority personnel. The project will use a survey on recruitment and retention developed by Strawbridge (1990). Results will be available on a Web site. The study goal is to identify ways that law enforcement agencies can fill sworn positions with quality personnel and recruit and hire more women and more members of facial and ethnic minorities. Toward this end, objectives are to (1) examine the extent to which law enforcement agencies are able to fill their sworn positions and hire women and racial/ethnic minorities; and (2) identify and examine the agency-level factors that affect hiring rates and the rates at which women and racial and ethic minorities are hired.
