PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 1999-LT-VX-K025 (S-2)

This project will continue the development of software that will capture the context of voice-to-voice interactions onto electronic forms. The project will also continue the development of voice-to-voice translation software that will incorporate CopTrans TM, a prototype voice translation system that translates English into Spanish or the reverse.

The goal of this supplemental project effort is to ensure communication between school personnel, parents and students and to ease the paperwork burden of school police and safety personnel. Specific objectives include: (1) developing the speech forms translator, (2) deploying three versions of the system, (3) field-testing the performance of each version, and (4) documenting the impact of each system on its users.

This application is for the development of a handheld speech to forms translation system based on the applicant's previous work with NIJ. The effort will extend the translation capabilities by improving the accuracy of "expectation-based" dialogues that occur during question and answer sessions. Software routines will also be developed to enable front-end data collection on an handheld PC and the interview data will be downloaded to a notebook or desktop computer through a cradle-type interface.
