Introduction Partial Matches

There are two different phenomena that sometimes get confused or use synonymously that we ought to distinguish: one of them is a partial or a close match that occurs during the normal functioning of CODIS. And essentially why that occurs is because there's some leeway in the criteria that are used to try to search and compare things, and the term that's used for that leeway  is something called moderate stringency.  That allows less than complete or perfect matches to occur depending on how much similarity there is  between the evidence profile and the closely matching or partially matching offender.  It may or not may not be a close relative.
