This annotated bibliography on Internet crimes against children encompasses the findings of relevant major studies, surveys, and reports that evaluate research done in the past 10 years.
An executive summary preceding the annotated bibliography first reviews the scope of the problem under the following subtopics: unwanted solicitation for sexual contact or pictures; pornography (children as the subject); harassment and bullying; and unwanted exposure to sexually explicit material. Other topics addressed in the executive summary are the role of parents and other caregivers in preventing children from becoming victims of Internet crime; the incidence of sexual solicitation, unwanted exposure to pornography, and bullying/harassment according to demographic and gender indicators; the role that law enforcement can play in countering online predators and the effectiveness of their investigations; and the psychological impact of Internet crimes on victims and implications for other criminal activity. The need for additional research and changes in approach to the problem are also discussed in the executive summary. The concluding section of the executive summary lists 28 publications used as sources for the executive summary. The 40 listings of the annotated bibliography following the executive summary encompass publications under the following topics: child pornography/exposure to sexually explicit material, unwanted sexual solicitation, harassment, and cyberbullying.
