Criminal Justice Requirements Resources Consortium

The IACP will continue their current work to support LEADS Scholars through their Annual Conference (scheduled for October 2019). The IACP is ideally situated to provide LEADS Scholars with connectivity to the larger policing community and provide the professional development essential to the success of the LEADS program.

Specifically, IACP will: Continue to host and facilitate the LEADS Community of Practice through the Higher Logic Platform, as well as develop and maintain a compendium of scholar projects, skills, and research interests (through Higher Logic); Continue to integrate LEADS Scholars in existing IACP efforts and opportunities, such as the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) and the newly developed IACP research section; Continue to explore the utility and possible implementation of a mentorship program between new Scholars and alumni; Oversee LEADS professional development activities, including connectivity with existing IACP training, development, and delivery of novel LEADS-focused training, connectivity with other relevant resources, integration into the IACP Research Section, and development of a professional development panel for the LEADS Summer session.

Under the original base funds, IACP has designed and made available the LEADS Community of Practice on the Higher Logic Platform. As of March 2020 there are 88 members [Scholars (including alumni) Academics, Civilians, and the support team (IACP, RAND, and PERF)] 26 items in the library (i.e., Covid-19 Virus Precautions and Contingency Plan) and 278 discussion threads (i.e., Developing Bench Marks in Policing). IACP has also developed and recently delivered the Leaders in Police Organization (LPOTM) for LEADS Scholars and Civilians. The balance of IACP funds are dedicated to covering the first delivery of LPO for LEADS, a second delivery of LPO for LEADS, developing the compendium of scholar projects, skills, and research interests, as well as continuing to host and facilitate the Community of Practice, and integration of LEADS participants into the RAC, and other IACP committees and subcommittees. Despite the depth and breadth of existing literature and research in the criminal justice community, some gaps remain in conducting research and translating to practical application. To help address the current gaps in data, research, and knowledge, the IACP will support the professional development of research-minded practitioners and administer activities that encourage practitioner-led research and evaluation. To support these goals, the IACP will provide tailored training and technical assistance to the NIJ LEADS Scholars program in order to increase the research capabilities of law enforcement practitioners and support the professional development activities of the LEADS Scholars. The IACP will oversee LEADS Scholars professional development opportunities by hosting the LEADS Scholars community of practice, integrating LEADS Scholars into existing IACP efforts and opportunities, and implementing a mentorship program between new Scholars and alumni, offering professional development opportunities to the LEADS Scholars, and supporting a workshop at the IACP annual conference. With this project, the IACP will enhance the capacity of the criminal justice community to collect and analyze data, conduct research that answers questions and produces evidence, and utilize research and evidence to better inform criminal justice policy.
