School Climate- Teacher Victimization

Despite the seriousness and importance of teacher victimization in the context of developing and I maintaining a safer school environment, it is surprising that relatively few empirical studies were conducted to examine the scope and predictors of teacher victimization and negative consequences. The proposed research attempts to address these limitations by exploring the scope and predictors of teacher victimization. Also, this proposed research will investigate the negative consequences of teacher victimization by examining whether victimization is significantly related to victimized teachers' emotional and physical wellbeing, job performance, teachers' connectedness to students and school, and job satisfaction. The proposed two-year longitudinal research (academic years 2016 and 2017) will plan to collect a representative sample of approximately 2,000 teachers at public schools across the city of San Antonio and its suburbs in Texas. To ensure proportional representation of teachers in each school, a stratified sampling design will be employed. Depending on school faculty size, 5 to 15 teachers in each school will be randomly selected from a list of teachers. With cooperation of administrators and teachers in each school, a letter with an accurate description of the proposed research will be handed out to randomly selected teachers in early 2016. The selected teachers will be asked to voluntarily fill out the survey on the Web that will be designed to investigate their victimization from students and its negative consequences prior to 12 months. The first wave survey will measure various types of victimization from students, teacher classroom management styles, school environmental factors, supervisor/peer supports, and negative consequences to testing the hypotheses regarding the causes and consequences of teacher victimization. Data analyses will focus primarily on two broad outcomes captured by the proposed data collection: teacher victimization and the physical and emotional consequences of victim ization. In exploring victimization as a dependent variable we expect to use hierarchical models nesting teachers within schools. Depending on prevalence or frequency analyses we anticipate using hierarchical generalized models linking to logit and negative binomial functions. The final report will present a description of all variables and predictors of teacher victimization, causal relationship between teacher victimization and negative consequences, and effects of conditioning factors linking teacher victimization to negative consequences. The research team will collaborate together to generate multiple research articles to submit to academic journals. Cleaned data and syntax, in SPSS readable format, will be archived with ICPSR upon completion of the final report.
