Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2010, $151,270)

The goal of the Alachua County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) Criminal Investigations Division Cold Case Unit is to evaluate and resolve unsolved homicide, missing person, unidentified human remains, and sexual battery cases. In this application, the ACSO Cold Case Unit is partnering with the Gainesville Police Department (GPD) Criminal Investigations Division. This collaborative effort will include sharing of knowledge, training, and case information to better reach each unit's goal of solving cases. Using previously unexplored DNA analysis technology, available through private DNA laboratories, the ACSO Cold Case Unit and GPD Criminal Investigations Division will be able to document and disseminate DNA information into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and ultimately develop sufficient suspect evidence to solve violent crime cases and prosecute defendants.
