Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $319,596)
The purpose of these funds will be used for LBPD to utilize grant funds to reestablish the cold case unit and hire two additional retired homicide investigators to expand the unit's ability to review and prioritize unsolved case evidence for DNA testing. Both the Los Angeles Sheriff's Dept. (LASD) and Crime Scene Technology's accredited laboratories have committed to working with LBPD to analyze DNA evidence in unsolved cases and will submit results to CODIS. The cold case unit will prioritize unsolved cases, focusing on those between one to 10 years old, and those that have been previously analyzed by Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) application which did not yield initial results. The grant will focus on over 1500 pieces of evidence from UCR Type 1 Violent Crimes.
