Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $80,000)
The purpose of these funds will be used for the Johnson County Criminalistics Laboratory (JCCL), a division of the Johnson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) for identification, organization, review, and prioritization of cold cases currently awaiting analysis under the purview of Johnson County, Kansas. A collaborative team approach will be utilized involving representatives from the Johnson County Crime Laboratory, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the District Attorney's Office, and the law enforcement agencies within Johnson County, Kansas. This funding is expected to allow in excess of 1500 hours of overtime work, permitting a thorough screening of all potential cold case files, follow-up investigation, evidence review and submission and analysis of the evidence for potential DNA. This grant award is anticipated to allow for case file review of at least twenty homicides and fifty sexual assaults.
