Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $1,164,441)

Justice and Public Saftey Cabinet (JPSC) and Kentucky Innocence Project (KIP)will use this grant to review an estimated backlog of 48 cases where actual innocence is claimed, to review cases that have viable claims of innocence, to provide extensive screening and information gathering necessary to determine if the cases are suitable for DNA testing, to investigate and locate evidence, to consult with witnesses and prosecutors, and analyze biological evidence from each viable case. More specifically the grant will be used to fund the necessary staff including two attorneys and four investigators, to defray the cost of mutually agreed upon laboratories and testing, and to defray the cost of hiring necessary consultants and contractor services, the purchase of laptops, computer equipment, and travel expenses.
