Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $2,500,000)

The purpose of these funds will be used to develop a portal from which to access the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System where the UDRS and the Find-the-Missing system databases can be accessed by Law enforcement, medical examiners, coroners, victim advocates, public providers and searched by the public.

The current system for tracking and attempting to solve cases involving unidentified decedent remains (UID) is a computerized database developed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) and managed by the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division. Leveraging this information has not been successful due to the lack of compliance and shortfall of entries, along with inadequate funding to support this service. NFSTC would develop and implement the establishment of a centralized web-based access portal to the Find-the-Missing system and UDRS to assist in a more efficient system to identify missing persons.
