Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $500,000)
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) and its partners propose to review and solve cold cases through DNA analysis over an 18 month period, beginning with a focus on unsolved homicides. IMPD's Homicide and Robbery Branch already has a Cold Case Unit consisting of three (3) detectives. They have identified over 450 homicide cold cases, some dating as far back as 1959. IMPD and partners estimate that it will take 18 months to complete review of these cases, gather evidence, complete DNA analysis and enter DNA profiles into CODIS (Combined DNA Indexing System). Partners anticipate that about half of cases (225 cases) will have evidence that can be subjected to DNA analysis.
