Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $259,977)
The St. Paul Police Department will use this grant funding to establish a Cold Case Unit under the direction of the Senior Commander. The Unit will review unsolved / cold case homicides for the last 35 years (approximately 104 unsolved cases) to determine whether evidence exists that could yield DNA. The Sergeant will submit any evidence to the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehensions (BCA) DNA Lab for testing, and do any follow up investigation on those cases with viable DNA evidence. The Cold Case unit would also utilize the funding to hire retired Homicide investigators to conduct case reviews, locate evidence with DNA potential, submit evidence to the MN BCA Lab (where allowable), and conduct team reviews of cases.
