Design Optimization of Integrated Multi-Ply Armors by a Computational Tool (DO-IMPACT)

Cornell University proposes to continue development of a computer-based tool to aid in designing body armor that would determine optimal layer properties and stacking sequence in order to achieve the lowest possible weight and the highest comfort for a required level of ballistic protection. In addition, Cornell University proposes an investigation in to the effects of stitch patterns and ply spacing on the ballistic performance of flexible armor panels and to apply a new understanding of micromechanics-based strength transfer mechanisms during dynamic tension and transverse wave propagation in a yarn to optimize the abilities of plies to cooperate in resisting projectile penetration without detrimental interference. This underlying research on body armor advanced designs will lead to the potential development of tools and technologies for use by local law enforcement agencies in order to better protect law enforcement officers.
