Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2005, $399,816)
The applicant proposes the development of an all-band/all-mode mobile radio optimized for public safety applications. This radio will be capable of reception and transmission on all frequency bands available to public safety agencies between 138 MHz and 4.99 GHz using any mode(s) authorized for the band currently in use. Furthermore, they propose to make design details and software freely available in the open source paradigm, so to make the results of this research as broadly available as possible. This project will culminate in laboratory and field evaluations of a cost-optimized prototype which demonstrates these features.
