Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $100,000)
The purpose of this study is to provide new information on intersections among the criminal justice and child welfare systems, family dynamics, and factors associated with intergenerational transmission of criminal offending and criminality. Although many families become concurrently involved in the criminal justice and child welfare systems, empirical studies combining information from these two systems have not been conducted. Utilizing linked state level administrative data available through established collaborative relationships with state correctional, public assistance, child welfare, and other agencies, this research will correlate prison admissions with child welfare spanning 1976 through 2003.
