Assessing Perceived Effects of I-502: A Survey on Recreational Cannabis in Washington State

The goal of this project is to understand public opinion about cannabis and the effects of implementing recreational legalization in Washington State after the passage of Initiative 502 in 2012. The research builds upon a random-sample mail and web survey of 2,100 adult residents of Washington State including 400 oversampled rural households conducted in Spring 2018 by WSU’s Social and Economic Sciences Research Center and funded by WSU’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Program. Content analysis of open-ended survey responses will examine: perceived effects of legalization, opinions about national legalization, controlled substances rescheduling, home-grows, pot lounges, stigma and peer pressure to use cannabis, lifetime use, six-month use, frequency of use in past 30 days, type most used (smokeable, edible, concentrate, vaporizer), motivations for using, polydrug use, substitution for alcohol/opioids, impacts of use on work, impacts of use on relationships, drugged driving, and black-market purchases.
