Award Information
Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2014, $425,000)
The goal of this program is for the State of Mississippi to implement an arrestee DNA collection program in keeping with the purposes of the Katie Sepich Enhanced DNA Collection Act of 2012. In 2014, the Mississippi State Legislature Passed Senate Bill SB 2430: An act to create Katie's Law; to provide for DNA collection from persons arrested for crimes of violence. The program objectives are to develop the infrastructure and processes needed to implement and sustain an arrestee DNA collection program. Implementation of the DNA Arrestee Collection Program by the MCL will involve many tasks to be performed by additional staff to be added. In order to implement the Arrestee Collection Program, MCL must add 10 positions to the Database Unit which is woefully understaffed at this time. We are requesting funds to fill a CODIS Manager position, five Senior Support Tech positions, two DPS Forensic Biologist I positions, and two Information Technology Positions. ca/ncf
