This award will provide funding for the University of Notre Dame du Lac to begin reasearch and development of a forensically
based, principled, and open system for face characterization that can be of use in criminal justice applications. The use of facial features will improve both the accuracy and speed of face recognition systems, decreasing case backlog by allowing for faster, automated, and more accurate identification of individuals from photographs.
