Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $981,178)

The purpose of these funds will be used to support a public-private partnership between the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine (VIFSM) for the development and administration of a Forensic Pathology Fellowship Recruitment and Training Program. VIFSM in partnership with the Virginia OCME will innovatively leverage the successes of the previously existing Pathology Fellowship and implement a recruitment program with incentives to attract qualified candidates to the Commonwealth. The goal is to train and certify four forensic pathology fellows in one year to improve the quality, thoroughness, and timeliness of death investigation, competence in performing forensic autopsies, and evidence collection. This will help to alleviate the lack of qualified candidates in the State lessening the burden and backlog of autopsies on the current staff. ca/ncf
