Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $353,843)
The purpose of this initiative submitted by the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) is to execute a strategy to identify, review and prioritize Uniform Crime Reports (UCR), Part 1 violent crime cold cases that have the potential to be solved through Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) analysis. Through the formation of a Pilot Cold Case Team (PCCT), members of the NJSP Major Crime Unit will work jointly with forensic scientists from the NJSP Office of Forensic Science Laboratory, the Division of Criminal Justice and the twenty-one prosecutors offices to identify, collect, retrieve and evaluate biological evidence in cold cases to be handled and screened for DNA analysis submission.
