Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $500,000)
The purpose of these funds will be used for the King County Sheriff's Office to create a dedicated Cold Case Unit to review, investigate, and adjudicate over 171 unsolved homicides and missing person cases currently in our backlog. This unit will operate for eighteen months with a follow up review to determine the feasibility to continue this program. The Cold Case Unit will work in conjunction with the King County Prosecutor's Cold Case Unit, Washington State Patrol Crime Lab, King County Medical Examiner's Office, and Washington State Attorney General's Office. King County Sheriff's Office will provide a staff comprised of experienced detectives and professionals. This staff will be under the supervision of the Criminal Investigation Division and work in conjunction with the current Major Crimes Unit.
