Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2008, $2,552,511)
The purpose of this project is to aid state and local law enforcement agencies as well as medical examiners and coroners throughout the US in the investigation of missing person and unidentified human decedent cases. This includes 1) DNA analysis (STR and mitochondrial DNA) with the upload of DNA profiles into the National CODIS+mito Missing Person database, 2) anthropological examinations to determine if skeletal remains are amenable for DNA analysis, 3) dissemination of DNA collection kits, 4) evaluation and implementation of novel DNA technologies with applications to missing persons cases, and 5)upload mtDNA and STR profiles generated by qualified non-CODIS participating laboratories.
