Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2007, $475,337)

The National Institute on Drug Abuse has partnered with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) for a joint initiative for research on retail drug markets, with a particular focus on methamphetamine markets. The purpose of this effort is to solicit research that integrates epidemiology with behavioral and economic studies of the composition and dynamics of drug markets, including drug manufacture, sale, and use. NIJ has decided to fund an application submitted by the National Development and Research Institutes, Inc. (NDRI) to study the Dynamics of Retail Methamphetamine Markets in New York City for a budget of $475,337. Using a mixed method approach including focus groups, ethnographic observation, and about 200 interviews based on respondent-driven sampling, this study will collect information to describe the characteristics, social networks, and market behaviors of methamphetamine users, buyers, and sellers.
