Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2006, $34,999)

The purpose of this project is to examine 'gender differences in the effect of mental illness on crime, how gendered differences in mental health treatment affect crime; and the gendered impact of criminal justice interventions on criminal recidivism.' The objectives of the study are to determine if the effects of depression and substance abuse on crime are different for males and females; if treatment for depression and substance abuse has differential effects on male and female crime; and whether criminal justice interventions affect gender differences in depression and substance use. The applicant proposes to use data from the 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to address these concerns. nca/ncf
