A Software-Defined Emergency Radio

The applicant will continue work in developing low-cost hardware for a multi-band software defined radio. Currently, handheld radios cost approximately $5000.00 per radio. The chip the applicant is working with has the potential to reduce the cost of the radio to hundreds of dollars per radio or less. Also it may have the capability of downloading the appropriate radio waveforms to a cell phone for use in ad-hoc incidents.

The activities that will be undertaken with this supplement will include the implementation of a prototype PCB board which accommodates GSM/P25 radio features on a single board using Locosto and supporting technologies and the performance characterization of the prototype board to establish software defined radio capabilities.
