Software-Defined Radio Technologies for Justice and Public Safety Communications

The applicant will continue work on research and development a software defined radio (SDR) and build a relationship with the local law enforcement agencies (Notre Dame PD, South Bend PD). When neighboring agencies have incompatible radio systems, SDR technology can help bridge the communications gap. The applicant will work on SDR issues, including waveform support, lower power consumption and physical form factor.

This project will continue work on another approach to developing a software defined cognitive radio for law enforcement radio, voice and data application. Multiple approaches are being funded to increase the odds of success and the speed with which this vitally needed technology is introduced into law enforcement application. Multiple, potentially successful and competitive, approaches will also tend to drive the cost of these technologies down.
