A Prototype Public Safety Cognitive Radio for Universal Interoperability

The work that the grantee is continuing from FY2005 will extend their development of a cognitive engine that can be used with software defined radios. Further research will be conducted and collaborated with law enforcement agencies. Also some work with developing antennas for a multi-band radio will be completed.

The applicant will continue work on developing a cognitive engine (CE) for a software defined radio. Working with the Virginia Tech Police Department (PD) and the Blacksburg PD, the applicant will further enhance capabilities of the CE. The CE has the capability to enhance a land mobile radio to identify which frequency band it is in, which will allow a law enforcement officer to communicate in an area outside of their radio footprint.
