Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2004, $400,000)

The goal of APRI's DNA Forensics Program is to increase the number of prosecutors that receive essential information relating to prosecutorial issues surrounding forensic DNA evidence. To achieve this goal over the next one-year grant period, APRI will work closely with the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and an expert Advisory Group to creating two compact discs with read only memory (CD-ROMs). Both CD-ROMS will complement the DNA Program's live interactive class, DNA: Witness to the Truth, the first will be used for "before-class" preparation and the second will be for "follow-up" learning. Each will provide a user much of the general knowledge all prosecutors need - Discovery and Ethics, Proper Closing Arguments, Rehabilitation, Case Assessment, etc. Importantly, the proposed CD-ROMs also will complement other forensic DNA evidence resources being developed by NIJ, e.g., the "Officers of the Court" CD-ROM, which provides a foundational understanding of the science, technology, statistics, and other non-advocacy topics.
