PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 98-WT-VX-0001 This proposal is a supplement to grant #98-WT-VX-0001. The original grant is for an experimental study of the Second Responders Program in Richmond, Virginia. The Second Responders are social workers who are called to the scene of domestic violence incidents (in the experimental precincts) immediately after determining the nature of the call, joining the police at the site of the call. They provide immediate crisis intervention as well as longer-term follow-up services and referrals. Because of program implementation problems the Police Foundation had to delay case selection until a reasonable case flow could be achieved. As part of the study, the Police Foundation is conducting two waves of victim interviews, with the second interview taking place six months after the original incident. At this juncture they have obtained 120 first wave interviews (57 experimental and 63 control), and 54 second wave interviews (22 experimental and 32 control). This supplement will enable the Police Foundation to complete the data collection and analysis of a sufficient number of cases to provide the statistical power needed to provide a strong evaluation of the Second Responders programs.
