The 55 data sets are grouped into 8 subject areas: community crime prevention, corrections, courts, crime types, criminal careers, criminal justice system, police, and sanctions. Within each category, the data sets are listed alphabetically by the principal investigator's name. Each listing contains the name of the institution that produced the data as well as the NIJ award number and a data set number assigned by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. The author, title, institution, and NIJ award number can be used to identify published reports and other documents that describe the data set, the data collection procedures, and the substantive findings of the research in more detail.
