CODIS uses three main indexes:
- The Forensic Index, Offender Index and Arrestee.
- The Forensic Index contains DNA profiles from crime scene evidence.
- The Offender Index contains DNA profiles from individuals who have been convicted of various offenses defined by State and/or Federal law.
The Arrestee Index contains DNA profiles of individuals who have been arrested for various offenses defined by State and/or Federal law. Not all states have laws authorizing or requiring DNA to be collected from individuals arrested for various offenses.
