The interpretation of results in casework can be one of the most difficult aspects of forensic DNA analysis and is a matter of professional judgment and expertise.⁰¹ It is not possible or practical to develop interpretation criteria that cover every circumstance. Laboratories should develop interpretation guidelines that are based on validation studies, literature, methodology, and experience. It is expected that laboratory guidelines will evolve as the collective experience of the laboratory and the forensic science community grows. Interpretation guidelines provide a framework for the objective and consistent interpretations of results.
