Amelogenin typing results may aid in interpreting a mixture containing male and female DNA,and may be particularly helpful in deciding whether the major contributor to a mixture is male or female. Likewise, Y-STR analysis may be useful to identify the DNA profile of male contributors in mixtures of male and female contributors, especially where high levels of female DNA are present with minor amounts of male DNA. For example, the number of male assailants in a suspected gang rape may be easier to determine using Y-STRs.
