While the future utility of SNPs is uncertain, it seems unlikely that this method will completely replace the standard set of STRs used for routine DNA analysis due to the limited variation of SNPs and difficulties with mixed sample interpretation. However, they will likely be used to augment traditional techniques to provide additional information to investigators.
