The prosecutor should ask the analyst to identify possible areas of attack by the defense attorney or defense expert witness and discuss these areas, even if they appear to have no merit. Areas of attack include possible evidence of a mixture, deviation from protocol, errors made, and corrective action taken.
Often when asked if there are any problems with the DNA typing process, an analyst will respond that there are none because from their perspective this is correct. Ask the analyst to identify areas that someone unfamiliar with the typing process might construe as a problem. Approached with an open mind, this can act as an invaluable preparation for trial testimony to rebut any claimed deficiency in the typing process.
