This article provides annotated listings for nine online resources that provide guidance on how to improve law enforcement officers' and other first responders' safety during line-of-duty vehicle driving and in performing other traffic law enforcement duties.
One listing is for the Below 100 Initiative, which focuses on safety training designed to reduce the number of line-of-duty driving-related officer deaths (http://below100.org/). A second listing, High Visibility Enforcement Toolkit, focuses on reducing highway traffic fatalities through "high visibility enforcement" (HVE), which combines law enforcement efforts with visibility elements and a publicity strategy (http://www.nhtsa.gov/Driving+Safety/Enforcement+&+Justice+Services/HVE). A third listing is offered by the International Association of Chiefs of Police/Highway Safety Committee and Traffic Officer Safety Subcommittee. Its website contains links to policies, articles, and various resources related to traffic stops (http://www.nij.gov/topics/law-enforcement/officer-safety/roadside-safety/Pages/welcome.aspx). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health highlights it research activities in motor vehicle safety of law enforcement officers. (http://www.cdc.gov?niosh/topics/leo/). The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund offers traffic-safety tips to help decrease officer injuries and fatalities, and the National Sheriffs Association has a traffic safety department that focuses on traffic safety issues, the facilitation of traffic safety program implementation, and support services. Other resources on law enforcement officers' safety in driving and traffic stops are provided by the Law Officer Magazine, the National Institute of Justice, Police One.com, and Traffic Incident management. The latter consists of a planned and coordinated multidisciplinary process for detecting, responding to, and clearing traffic incidents so that traffic flow may be restored as safely and quickly as possible.
