Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $1,297,996)

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is a statewide forensic laboratory system, which offers a full range of forensic laboratory services and is accredited by ASCLD/LAB-International® (American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board). DFS intends to utilize funding under this grant program to increase testing capacity in the Forensic Biology Section, provide continuing education for DNA scientists, and increase efficiency in the DNA Data Bank Section.

Project Goals:

1. Maintain the Current Personnel Capacity of the Forensic Biology Section

2. Increase the capacity of the Forensic Biology Section

3. Increase the capacity of the Forensic Biology Section to analyze more DNA mixtures

4. Maintain Testing Efficiency in the DNA Data Bank Section

5. Increase testing efficiency in the DNA Data Bank Section

6. Provide the Required Continuing Education for Scientific Staff in the Forensic Biology Section
