Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $741,153)

Dallas County’s Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences is a local forensic laboratory that performs forensic DNA casework analysis on behalf of investigating agencies and prosecutor offices. Dallas County’s 2019 CEBR grant project is focused upon the expansion of the laboratory’s capacity to perform evidence screening and forensic DNA analysis. Expansion of the laboratory’s testing capacity will be achieved by the training of new staff. We will use grant funds for supplies to train new staff in the casework procedures used by the laboratory. We will also acquire and validate equipment and instruments used in evidence screening and forensic DNA analysis. We will also validate a new kit for Y chromosome DNA testing and train staff in procedures using this kit. Finally, we will provide outside training to staff in the areas of bloodstain pattern analysis and forensic DNA analysis in order to meet existing professional standards.
