Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $1,857,667)

The intent of this proposal is to minimize the impact of the increased workload on the DNA casework and database laboratories in the Washing State Patrol Crime Laboratory Division (WSPCLD) to maintain the highest possible quality of Forensic DNA testing while keeping up with advances in the field. This will be achieved by: 1) Maintaining and increasing the capacity of all WSPCLD laboratories; 2) equipping a new DNA section in Vancouver Crime Laboratory specializing in SAK cases to help meet the increase in service demand; 3) maintaining continuing education for casework and database analysts; and 4) reducing the existing backlog of cases by outsourcing lower-priority cases and cases for which WSPCLD lacks the technology to provide service.
