Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2019, $1,656,427)

The Virginia Department of Forensic Science (DFS) intends to utilize funding under this grant program to increase testing capacity in the Forensic Biology Section, provide continuing education for DNA scientists, and increase efficiency in the DNA Data Bank Section. The project will achieve the following goals: 1) Maintain the Current Personnel Capacity of the Forensic Biology Section by supporting employment of five forensic scientist positions and two support positions; 2) increase the capacity of the casework section by purchasing reagents to screen sexual assault kits; 3) maintain testing efficiency in the DNA Data Bank Section by purchasing buccal sample collectors; 4) increase testing efficiency in the DNA Data Bank Section by purchasing DNA testing chemistries that can process buccal samples with a direct to DNA testing procedure; and 5) providing continuing education.
