Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2018, $1,283,308)

The Biology (DNA) Section of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Scientific Services Bureau has two specific goals for this proposal; to reduce the casework backlog by five percent and turnaround time for casework by ten percent by the end of the award period.

The LASD-SSB will face many challenges in 2019. These challenges include a continued increase in case requests, a lack of Bureau-funded paid overtime, limited funding for continuing education training, and deadlines for sexual assault kit turnaround time that have been recommended by new state law. The unit has also been operating below staffing capacity in the last year due to various staff training commitments.

In order to meet the specific goals of reducing backlogged cases and turnaround time, the proposed budget will provide funding for paid overtime, supplies, travel/training, STRmix licenses, a high-powered desktop computer and a new high-capacity capillary electrophoresis instrument. NCA/NCF
