The Illinois Innocence Project (IIP) intends to focus on false confession and/or eyewitness misidentification cases for which DNA testing may be a plausible means to determine actual innocence. The agency has pre-screened/identified 114 cases involving (70 of these cases involve eyewitness misidentification, 26 involve false confession and 18 involve both). Initially, IIP will use funding to pursue DNA testing in identified cases. During the second stage, cases that show potential for innocence and are viable for DNA testing will be evaluated and investigated. IIP will also continue evaluating new cases as individuals request assistance.
