Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2017, $125,000)

The York County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) requests funding under the DNA Capacity and Backlog Reduction Grant to improve the quality and timeliness of forensic science services provided by the Forensic Biology Laboratory as well as significantly decrease the backlog of cases.

Funding from this grant will be utilized to increase screening techniques and documentation with the purchase of an M-Vac and 2 SLR digital cameras, improve computer hardware and software with purchases of an upgraded computer for the continuous probabilistic genotyping software and upgraded DNA worksheets for the LIMS, and contracted validation of Y-STRs for the laboratory. All DNA samples generated from this grant will be uploaded to SDIS and NDIS following NDIS guidelines. It is expected that the processes added to the laboratory from this grant funding will allow the YCSO forensic biology lab to decrease the backlog to within 90 days of receipt of a case. nca/ncf
