The goal of this project is to understand how neighborhood characteristics contribute to probation failures. This study proposes to examine 10 years of closed probation cases managed by the Cook County Department of Adult Probation. The applicant will leverage an extant dataset including administrative data from the Cook County Circuit Court, the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, and the Illinois State Police. They will examine the spatial distribution and concentration of adult probationers in Chicago neighborhoods, to evaluate the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and probation outcomes, and to estimate an individuals risk of being on probation based on their neighborhood context.
